Imperial Imaging and Intervention Center organises CME On 'Radiological Intervention and Advancements.’

Chandigarh: Senior members of the National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) attended a Continuing Medical Education (CME) event organized by the Imperial Imaging and Intervention Center, Chandigarh on the topic of ‘Radiological Intervention and Advancements.’ The CME was graced by Dr. Sanjeev Goyal, Registrar of the Board of Ayurveda and Unani System of Medicine Punjab as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Ravi Doomra, Director, Ayurveda, Punjab, as the Guest of Honour. Dr RP Gaba, Patron of NIMA, served as the coordinator for the event.

The experts deliberated upon different aspects of radiological intervention in treating various diseases. The latest interventions and advancements in radiology were discussed extensively during the CME. Topics raised included the PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment for knee osteoarthritis, liver abscess drainage, and FNAC or Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology - a diagnostic procedure used to investigate the body's lumps or masses, among others. The experts also confabulated on advancements in low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening.

Dr Tejeshwar Singh Jugpal, (MD Radiodiagnosis, MAMC, FVIR PGIMER, Chandigarh) who is the Director and Chief Radiologist at Imperial Imaging and Intervention Centre said, "Minimally invasive procedures done under interventional radiology are the future of medicine. An example of such an intervention is Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, treatment which could be revolutionary in addressing knee osteoarthritis. PRP plasma is derived from a patient's own blood. We take 20 ml of blood, process it, and use a technology to extract PRP from the blood collected. In patients with moderate degree knee arthritis, we can reduce knee pain and help in healing through PRP injections.”

Another intervention dwelled upon was Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology(FNAC), a diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps or masses in the body. It was stated by speakers that with the help of CT and USG, a sample can be taken without any general anesthesia which means no big surgery is needed and just FNAC is to be used. This causes minimal pain and the patient can leave for home after just half an hour.

Prominent NIMA members in attendance included Dr Meenu Gandhi, President, NIMA; Dr Vivek Ahuja, General Secretary, NIMA and Dr Deepam Batta, Treasurer, NIMA. It is worth mentioning that the Imperial Imaging and Intervention Center was highlighted for its role as the only standalone intervention center in the Tricity area, specializing in non-vascular interventions.
